The Keizer Fire District responded to the report of an apartment fire shortly after 4:30 pm on Wednesday August 3rd 2011. When units arrived on scene they observed heavy smoke and flames coming from the rear of two apartments.

The call was received at 4:37pm for a fire at 1195 Clearview Ave NE in Keizer. Arriving fire crews found the rear of a downstairs apartment fully involved in flames. The flames had traveled into the upstairs apartment and were spreading through both residences. Four apartments in the building received heavy smoke, water and fire damage. Damage estimates to the residence and contents is unknown at this time.

The apartment complex is owned by Greg and Monique Morgan and Katharyn Skorniak. Morgan was at the complex at the time of the fire, he and the maintenance worker, Josh Wolfe attempted to evacuate the apartments. Officer Olafson with the Keizer Police Department had been at the complex on another call, when he heard someone shouting fire. He radio dispatch with the information and began evacuating apartments.

Morgan and Wolf had been doing some work at the apartment complex when they smelled smoke and heard someone yell. When they opened the apartment door they saw heavy black smoke and flames coming from the rear of the apartment.

Seven engines, two medics, one duty officer vehicle, one ladder truck, one air rig, one fire investigation vehicle and 40 firefighters responded to the incident. No human injuries were reported: however at leastone cat perished in the fire. Marion County Fire District One and Salem Fire Department responded as mutual aid to the call. The fire is under investigation at this time.

"Neighbors getting to know their neighbors" was the common thread of Tuesday night's National Night Out Celebration in Marion County.

Twenty four neighborhood watch groups gathered throughout the county to celebrate the event and send a strong message that they are unified and committed to preventing crime in their neighborhoods.

Approximately 50 Marion County Sheriff's employees, from each of the Divisions joined in teams to visit the watch parties in Sublimity, Jefferson, Turner, Scotts Mills, Salem, Monitor and Woodburn. Crime prevention tips were shared, but the main focus was on interacting with the residents of our county.

150 people from Sublimity gathered at Pioneer Park where they enjoyed a bar-b-q prepared by Sublimity Sr. Deputy Chris Bangs, City officials and business owners. Most the food was donated or provided at cost; unused food was given to the Stayton Food Bank.

Deputy Todd Swendsen provided a canine demonstration that thrilled the kids. "Break the Chain ®" apparel, a Stayton company formed to prevent domestic violence, brought their monster truck, "Hope", for display and offered handouts to the residents.

Jefferson held its annual event at the "bridge" and celebrated with a bar-b-q and games for the children. Several hundred residents took part in that celebration. Sheriff Jason Myers stopped by to meet the residents and watch the kids playing in the inflatable "bouncy" balloon. Jefferson resident, Joe Zehr commented, "This was great opportunity for folks who live their lives in their own little circles to step out and meet their neighbors. They also get to know the deputies working in their community". Zehr also recognized the Jefferson Fire for displaying their fire equipment.

Salem's Santana Park was filled with 325 people who thoroughly enjoyed the canine demonstration (photo attached) by Deputy Jeff Stutrud and his volunteer "bad guy", Deputy Curt Henckel. After consuming bar-b-q'd hot dogs and burgers, children attending the event had the chance to get a laminated photo ID with their personal identification and a thumb print on it (photo attached). Target Stores provided face-painting for the kids, while the Salem Bicycle Club completed safety inspections in the children's bicycles.

Another photo opportunity was a life-size poster of a deputy with a cut-out for the child's head. Over 90 children had their photos taken as "Junior Deputies" (photo attached). Deputies and kids also formed teams to play participated in water balloon games.

A core function of the Sheriff's Office is to work collaboratively with our community, law enforcement and business partners to prevent crime and solve problems affecting the community. The National Night Out celebration is but one event that helps us achieve that goal and provide service to our community.

Two firefighters with the Salem Fire Department were recently promoted after completion of on-the-job training requirements and competitive civil service examinations.

On July 2, 2011, Firefighter Bobby LaMar was promoted to Apparatus Operator (A/O)/Engineer. A/O LaMar started his career with the Salem Fire Department in 2001. A/O LaMar is also a current member of the Salem Fire Department Water Rescue Team and a paramedic.

On July 3, 2011, Firefighter Brad Paris was promoted to Captain. Captain Paris started his career with the Salem Fire Department in 2000. Captain Paris is involved with the Salem Fire Department Honor Guard and is a founding member of the Salem Professional Firefighters Pipes and Drums, which was created in February of 2008. Captain Paris is also a paramedic.
