Two Motorists Face Reckless Driving Charges

Two motorists are facing reckless driving charges following their arrests in separate incidents in Marion County.
Traffic Safety Deputy Ethan Griffith was patrolling on his motorcycle on Friday at 1:00pm. He spotted a black BMW sedan entering Interstate 5 from the Delaney Road bypass in Salem. The car was traveling at a high rate of speed, which was verified by radar at 105 miles per hour. The posted bypass speed limit is 55mph.
The driver, Micah Villarreal, is an 18-year old U.S. Air Force Cadet stationed in Colorado Springs. He was in Salem visiting relatives. He told Deputy Griffith he was just "merging into traffic". Villarreal was arrested and booked into the Marion County Jail on Reckless Driving charges. He was also cited for the speeding violation. His vehicle was impounded.

On Saturday, July 23, 2011, Dr. Larry Lewman, Oregon State Deputy Medical Examiner performed an autopsy upon the body of Albert G. Hopkins. He determined that Mr. Hopkins died as a result of a homicide by firearm. This homicide occurred within the city limits of Mt. Angel, Oregon on July 22, 2011. Timothy D. Davis of Mt. Angel was arrested later that evening in regard to this homicide. He was lodged in the Marion County Jail on charges of 1st Degree Murder and 2nd Degree Assault. He is being held without bail until his first appearance on Monday July 25, 2011 at the Marion County Court Annex, 9000 Aumsville Highway, Salem, Oregon. The afternoon in custody arraignments are scheduled for 3 p.m.

Marion County Investigators, assisted by officers & detectives from several surrounding agencies, are working through the night on the shooting investigation in Mt. Angel.
The victim has been identified as Albert G. Hopkins, 54. Hopkins lived with his girlfriend and her son in their home on North Spruce Street, near the scene of the shooting. He suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Four Arrested Following Fight in Jefferson

Two juveniles and two adults were arrested following a disturbance in Jefferson Thursday evening.
Marion County Deputies Andrew Derschon and Dale Huitt were called to the parking lot of the Jefferson Feed Store, 216 Church Street at about 6:30pm. The initial reports were that two juveniles were fighting and a crowd was gathering. One juvenile was reported to be armed with a hammer.
The crowd became unruly and began closing in on the deputies so additional assistance was requested. 4 Marion County Deputies and 2 Linn County Deputies responded to quiet the disturbance.
The two 16-year old juveniles involved in the original fight were arrested for Disorderly Conduct II. They were cited and released to the custody of their parents. Both were Jefferson residents. The reason for the initial fight is not known.

Andy Huerta (DOB 4-15-92) entered guilty pleas today to three separate counts of Murder, Attempted Aggravated Murder and Robbery stemming from a crime spree in Salem on 8-29-10. Marion County Circuit Court Presiding Judge Jamese L. Rhoades entered the guilty pleas. Huerta was represented by attorneys Thomas Sermak and Jessica Kampfe, both of the Marion County Public Defenders Office.

Dayton Man Arrested at Mountain Campsite

Marion County Deputy Andrew Derschon arrested a Dayton man after he caused a family disturbance, assaulted his son, and threatened other family members at a camp site near Detroit Lake.
Michael J. Williams, 38, was arrested on charges of Assault IV, Menacing, and Supplying Alcohol to Minors at 12:25am, Wednesday morning. Deputy Derschon responded to a family member's call from a campsite on French Creek Road near Detroit. Williams and other family members were camping there and fishing in the river.

A status hearing for convicted murder, Gary Haugen, is scheduled for Thursday, July 21st, at 9:00am.

Judge Jamese Rhoades will be presiding over the hearing in Judge Joseph Guimond's courtroom (Room #1440 at the Marion County Court, 100 High Street SE, Salem, OR.).
Judge Rhoades has appointed new counsel, Gregory Scholl, of the Metropolitan Public Defender's Office in Washington County. He will be present at the hearing on Thursday. They will likely be discussing evaluations for Mr. Haugen and time frames for future hearings.

Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers are continuing the investigation into Tuesday night's wrong-way single vehicle serious injury crash on Interstate 5 in the Wilsonville area that is leading to numerous charges for the car's driver.
According to Trooper Paul Geark, on July 19, 2011 at approximately 11:52 p.m. the OSP Northern Command Center dispatch received a report of a single vehicle traffic crash in the southbound lanes of Interstate 5 near milepost 283 north of Wilsonville Road. Prior to the reported crash, troopers were attempting to locate a vehicle that was the subject of multiple calls about a wrong way driver traveling at a high rate of speed northbound in the southbound lanes of Interstate 5 near milepost 282.

Lebanon House Fire

Monday evening at 17:53 LFD was dispatched to a house fire in the 1800 block of S. 7th street. Upon arrival, firefighters found a single family dwelling with smoke and flames showing from the front and rear of the house. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire, but not before it had spread into the attic and through the roof. The house was occupied at the time of the fire. All occupants were able to safely evacuate the building and no injuries were reported. Damage to the structure was extensive although fire crews were able to salvage many of the occupants possessions.

After nearly 3 months and 4,800 miles, a brother and sister arrived in Astoria, Oregon Monday afternoon completing their cross-country bicycle journey in memory of a daughter who was killed at age 5.
Carl and Sallie McDonald, a brother and sister team, rode bicycles from Florida to Oregon after leaving in late April from Amelia Island, Florida. Each day, their ride averaged 60 miles and was dedicated to those whose lives have been affected by drunk driving. Carl's only child, Carlie, was killed in a drunken driving collision in 1998 in Green River, Wyoming.
