Animal Neglect Case is closed with Suspect Convicted and Sentenced

News Release from: Marion Co. Sheriff's Office
ANIMAL NEGLECT CASE IS CLOSED WITH SUSPECT CONVICTED AND SENTENCED
Posted: September 14th, 2011 4:02 PM

In March of this year, Sr, Deputy Brenda Lumley seized 3 malnourished horses and 14 starving llamas from a farm on Towers Road SE near Stayton.

As result of her investigation, the suspect in the case, Mikerra Lane, plead No Contest to 6 counts of Animal Neglect in the Second Degree.

She was sentenced on Wednesday, September 7th, and was placed on court probation (for each count) for 36 months. Lane will be required to complete 80 hours of community service work, and pay monetary assessments. The remaining charges were dismissed in lieu of the plea agreement.

By statute, Lane will not be allowed to possess animals (domestic or livestock) for the next 5 years.

As part of the plea agreement, Lane forfeited the animals that were seized. The Light House Animal Sanctuary, in Scio, will now start the process of finding homes for the animals. Under their care, the animals have regained weight and are doing very well.

The criminal case was handled by Deputy District Attorney Melissa Wakeman.
