At approximately 7:39 a.m. on August 10, 2011, fire crews from the Salem Fire Department were dispatched to the 900 block of Front Street NE in Salem, Oregon on a report of a fire located in the second floor break room of the United Gospel Mission Annex and Donation Center. The fire was discovered by an employee who was in the process of opening up the building for business. Once the employee discovered the fire he called 9-1-1 and reported the fire.

Firefighters gained access and found a small fire that had been extinguished by the building's fire sprinkler system. The fire, which originated in the second floor break room area, produced sufficient heat to activate one fire sprinkler head located in the room. Firefighters worked through the burned area to determine the fire was out and also provided ventilation in the building, removing smoke and water. The fire sprinkler system operated as designed, controlling the fire and preventing fire spread throughout the building.

Fire damage was limited to the immediate area with light smoke and water damage in other portions of the building. Fire investigation personnel from Salem Fire have conducted an investigation into the cause and origin and determined the fire to be accidental in nature related to mechanical/electrical failure of a floor cooling fan. Fire damage is estimated at $5,000 to the building and contents. The building is valued at approximately $950,000.

No injuries to firefighters or occupants were reported and the business is expected to be back in operation today with minimal disruption. The fire crews were back in service within 1 hour and the incident was closed at approximately 8:30 a.m.
