SALEM FIRE DEPARTMENT HOSTS READY TO LEARN - READY TO WORK
Posted: October 6th, 2011 4:45 PM
In partnership with the Salem Chamber of Commerce, the Salem Fire Department will provide a one day hands-on training academy to area high school students as part of the Ready to Learn - Ready to Work program. The program, which began in 2004, partners the local chamber of commerce, Salem-Keizer School District, and area businesses in learning experiences for local students.
The work-based learning experience at Salem Fire will include overviews of fire service careers, facility tours, skill stations, and hands-on events to introduce students to the challenges and rewards of a career in the fire service and emergency medical professions. Students will learn first-hand how and why the things they study in school are connected to jobs, careers, and further education. The program is also designed to help students better understand the importance of workforce skills and attitudes and help them develop and refine a vision of their future. Twenty five high-school students from the local area were selected through a competitive process to attend the Salem Fire Department program.
This year's Ready to Learn - Ready to Work academy will be held on Friday, October 7, 2011 at the airport fire station/training facility, which is located at 2742 25th Street SE in Salem, Oregon.
