Marion County Deputies along with inspectors from the Oregon Liquor Control Commission recently conducted a minor sales check to see if businesses that sell alcohol were complying with Oregon statute prohibiting the sale of alcohol to minors.

This county-wide effort was a coordinated project with CERV (Committed Enforcement and Responsible Vendors in Marion County). CERV is a partnership between Salem, Keizer, Woodburn and Stayton Police Departments, the Marion County Sheriffs Office, OLCC, Willamette University, Community Action Drug Prevention Network and the Marion County Health Department. It was formed in 2003 to protect our communities from the dangers of underage drinking and the residual effects it causes. More information about CERV is available at: http://www.co.marion.or.us/HLT/PS/prevention/overview.htm
On June 24th, five 18 and 19-year-old Marion County Sheriff's Cadets entered stores in Jefferson, Turner, Salem, Mill City and Detroit and attempted to purchase alcohol. The checks were made between 5:00pm and 11:00pm.
During the checks, our Cadets attempted to purchase alcohol from an OLCC licensed business to see if the staff were checking identification and refusing to sell alcohol to anyone under 21.
The Cadets used their own legal identification that revealed they were under 21 and did not disguise or lie about their age to encourage the sale of alcohol.
