WOULD-BE BANK ROBBER ARRESTED IN ST. PAUL
Posted: September 14th, 2011 5:39 PM

With the help of an alert Oregon State Trooper, Marion County Sr. Deputy David Wagner arrested a would-be robber minutes after he attempted to rob the US Bank in St. Paul.

Deputies responded to a call from the bank at 3:15pm. A teller reported that minutes before, she was approached by a man who demanded that she give him the money from her cash drawer and place it in his briefcase.

The teller stymied the man by telling him she couldn't do that. After a moment of staring at the teller, the man left the bank on foot. He was described as being a white male, in the 30's, wearing a black hoodie and carrying a soft briefcase or tote bag. He also wore sunglasses.

Deputy Wagner was driving to the scene, assisted by OSP Sr. Trooper Jeff Leighty. Approximately 2 miles from the bank, Trooper Leighty spotted a gold 1997 Saturn stopped on the side of the road on St. Paul Highway. He stopped to check out the lone male subject with the vehicle while Deputy Wagner continued to the scene.

As the investigation unfolded, Wagner learned that the Saturn was the likely suspect vehicle involved. Investigators recovered the briefcase and clothing worn by the suspect inside the Saturn. They also learned that the vehicle had run out of gasoline.

Adam J. Bentley, 36, of Canby, was taken into custody and booked at the Marion County Jail. He is charged with Attempted Robbery II and coercion. Bentley also had a misdemeanor warrant for driving while suspended. He will appear in court on Thursday at 1:00pm. No weapon was displayed by Bentley or recovered by the investigators. No other suspects are believed to be involved. No one was injured during this attempted robbery.

A booking photo of Bentley will be released when available.
