News Release from: Marion Co. Sheriff's Office
WOMAN KILLED BY TRAIN NEAR GERVAIS
Posted: October 1st, 2011 2:54 PM

At approximately 2:00am, this morning, Marion County Deputies responded to a train versus pedestrian accident on the Union Pacific tracks, 1 mile north of Gervais.

Deputy Thomas Barber arrived and determined that a southbound Union Pacific train had struck an unidentified female adult. She was pronounced dead at the scene from her injuries. At this time, deputies are in the process of identifying her. Her name will be withheld until family notifications are made.

Both the conductor and engineer of the train told investigators the train was traveling approximately 46 mph when they observed something lying in the tracks ahead. Both indicated it is common to have garbage bags discarded on the tracks in this rural area. As the train got closer, they realized the object was a body lying between the tracks. They initiated procedures to stop the train, but the 2-engine, 2700' long freight train took almost a mile to stop. They were unable to avoid hitting the female.

Union Pacific Investigators were assisting with the investigation. Union Pacific's Media Relations Director Aaron Hunt is available for questions at 916-960-7511.

The investigation is on-going. No further information is available at this time. No photos from the scene are available.
