3:30pm:
Deputy Casey Burnham and members of the Marion County Sheriff's Office CRASH team are continuing the investigation into this morning's fatal crash south of Salem.

Preliminary information indicates that a red 2000 Suzuki JLX driven by Cassandra E. Maughan, 26, of Salem was traveling northbound on River Road when she lost control of her vehicle and struck a gray 2007 Honda Odyssey head on. The Honda was driven by Laura L. Sharr, 47, of Salem, and was traveling southbound on River Road.
Both Sharr and Maughan were transported to the Salem Hospital for treatment. Maughan was the driver extricated from her vehicle by fire personnel. The extent of their injuries is not known. Consistent with HIPAA regulations, we will not release further information about their medical condition without their approval.
A passenger in Maughan's vehicle, Kyle L. Hilliard, 32, of Independence, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The CRASH team is still conducting its forensic examination of the scene. The road remains blocked at Vita Springs and saw Mill Roads, but traffic is being directed around the scene on a detour that is well-marked. We expect the road will be open by 6:00pm, today.
