A convicted felon, with 37 prior arrests was taken into custody this morning, following a coordinated effort by Salem Police Officers and Deputies from the Marion County Sheriff's Office. Richard Davis, 41, of Salem was lodged at the Marion County jail on numerous charges.

At 1:30am, Deputy Andrew Derschon saw Davis driving a 2003 Kawasaki Ninja on Interstate 5. He was stopped for making an unsafe lane change. As the deputy approached the motorcycle, Davis sped off and exited onto Market Street. Minutes later, Deputy Justin Kinyon spotted the motorcycle and followed it as it reached speeds of 100mph. Near the intersection of Hampden Lane NE and Swegle Road NE, Davis abandoned the motorcycle in a berry field and fled on foot. Salem K9 Officer Miranda searched the area with his canine, but Davis was able to get away. Deputies located a wallet with identification for Davis, along with 8 grams of methamphetamine in the saddlebags of the motorcycle.
Several hours later, deputies were called to the area of State Street and Elma Ave SE where the owner of a 1991 Toyota Camry reported it was stolen from his house. As deputies were taking the stolen vehicle report, Salem Officer Mike Baskett spotted the stolen Camry and tried to stop it. The driver jumped out of the car while it is still moving, causing the car to run into a house near the intersection Sunnyview and Cordan. The house had minor damage, but no one was injured. Salem Officers ultimately took the driver into custody after deploying a Taser when he resisted arrest. He was identified as Richard Davis.
Davis was in possession of a loaded 9mm handgun, approximately $1000 in cash, and scales for weighing drugs when arrested. Officers also found the key to the motorcycle that was stopped by Deputy Derschon earlier in the morning. Davis denied being the driver of the motorcycle.
Deputy Kinyon, the acting Supervisor for the shift, added, "We're grateful to Salem PD for their help in putting this suspect in jail. Davis' lengthy record, combined with the drugs and the weapon we seized tells us he's been criminally active in Marion County. Our community is a safer place when he's off the streets."
Davis' prior record includes a number of arrests for the Unlawful Use of Motor Vehicles.
