BROTHER AND SISTER ARRIVE IN ASTORIA AFTER 4,800 MILE BIKE RIDE IN MEMORY OF DRUNK DRIVING CRASH VICTIMS (PHOTOS)

After nearly 3 months and 4,800 miles, a brother and sister arrived in Astoria, Oregon Monday afternoon completing their cross-country bicycle journey in memory of a daughter who was killed at age 5.

Carl and Sallie McDonald, a brother and sister team, rode bicycles from Florida to Oregon after leaving in late April from Amelia Island, Florida. Each day, their ride averaged 60 miles and was dedicated to those whose lives have been affected by drunk driving. Carl's only child, Carlie, was killed in a drunken driving collision in 1998 in Green River, Wyoming.


Carl is a retired Lieutenant in the Wyoming State Patrol, and currently serves as the National Law Enforcement Initiatives Manager for Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD). His sister, Sallie, is a retired executive with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
They arrived July 18, 2011 at 2:20 p.m. at the Columbia River Memorial Museum in Astoria where a crowd of 20 supporters welcomed them including Astoria Mayor Willis Van Dusen, state and local law enforcement officers, MADD supporters and local citizens.
After spending Tuesday in Astoria, they will travel by shuttle to Portland to catch a Thursday morning flight home.
