Monday evening at 17:53 LFD was dispatched to a house fire in the 1800 block of S. 7th street. Upon arrival, firefighters found a single family dwelling with smoke and flames showing from the front and rear of the house. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire, but not before it had spread into the attic and through the roof. The house was occupied at the time of the fire. All occupants were able to safely evacuate the building and no injuries were reported. Damage to the structure was extensive although fire crews were able to salvage many of the occupants possessions.
LFD Investigators were able to complete their investigation this morning and have determined the cause of the fire to be improper installation of the dryer vent and a failure to maintain the vent, free from lint.
LFD would like to take this opportunity to remind homeowners and occupants that in addition to cleaning the lint trap on your dryer, you must also periodically clean the dryer vent itself as lint will build up over time. Also, whenever possible, it is desirable to have as few bends as possible in the dryer vent pipe which should be as short as possible to reach the exterior of the house. Smooth, rigid dryer vent pipes are always preferable to ribbed flex pipe when feasible.
